EDITORS COMMENTS
Esther in the presence of Ahasuerus, 1866. Artist: Gustave Dore In this black and white wood engraving by Gustave Dore, we witness a pivotal moment from the Old Testament book of Esther. The scene depicts Esther (Haddash or Hadassah), a courageous young woman who has concealed her Jewish identity, entering the presence of King Ahasuerus with trepidation etched across her face. As she stands before the Persian monarch, fear overwhelms Esther as she expects death if her true heritage is discovered. Ahasuerus, portrayed here as Xerxes I, ruled Persia during the fifth century BCE. Seeking a new queen among his kingdom's beautiful virgins, he unknowingly selects Esther to ascend to this coveted position. Through her bravery and cunning strategy, Queen Esther unveils a plot devised by Haman, one of the king's trusted advisers. This revelation earns favor for her people and saves them from persecution at Haman's hands. Dore masterfully captures this intense moment within an opulent palace interior where secrecy reigns supreme. The artist skillfully portrays not only Esther's unconscious state but also conveys the underlying tension that permeates throughout this historical narrative. This nineteenth-century print serves as a powerful reminder of courage in adversity and highlights how individuals can influence their destinies even when faced with overwhelming odds.
