EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exterior of the New Greek Church on London Wall, as it appeared in 1850. The church, which is predominantly plain in its exterior design, comes alive on its north or entrance front. This side of the building is divided into two stories by a bold and enriched moulding. The lower story boasts an arcade of three arches opening into a corridor, providing access to the church. The upper story features a similar arcade containing three deeply recessed windows. The capitals of the columns and the enrichments are in good style and exceptionally well done, showcasing the intricate details of the Romanesque architectural features. A bold cornice, supported by consoles, runs around the upper part of the church, and there are pediments at the respective fronts of the building - that to the north being crowned with a cross. The New Greek Church on London Wall was designed by the architect T. E. Owen, Esq. of Portsmouth, and constructed by Mr. Jay, of City-road Basin. This architectural masterpiece, as described in the Illustrated London News in 1850, stands as a testament to the rich history and cultural diversity of London during the Victorian era. The print, which is an engraving from the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to appreciate the beauty and intricacy of this religious and architectural landmark.
