Exterior of the [Royal] Pavilion Theatre, Whitechapel, 1856. Creator: Unknown
Exterior of the [Royal] Pavilion Theatre, Whitechapel, 1856. Theatre in east London destroyed by fire. The flames...mounted so high into the air as to be visible for miles distant, although daylight; and by ten o'clock every part of the establishment was reduced to a heap of smoking ruins. Mrs. Connorton, the proprietress of the buiiding, was insured for the machinery, wardrobe, and theatre, in the Phoenix and Monarch fire offices. Messrs. Elphinstone aud Neale, the lessees, who have lost a vast quantity of property by the disastrous event, were entirely uninsured. As to the origin of the misfortune, nothing that can be depended upon can be ascertained. The previous night a piece called "The Red Crow" was performed, which terminated with the burning of the Robin Hood Tavern; and it is not unlikely that some of the burning embers may have remained smouldering during the night'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the exterior of the Royal Pavilion Theatre in Whitechapel, London, following a devastating fire that engulfed the building in 1856. The theatre, located in the eastern part of the city, was a popular entertainment venue that had recently staged a production of "The Red Crow," which ended with the burning of the Robin Hood Tavern. The flames, fueled by the wooden structure and the remnants of the previous night's performance, reached such heights that they were visible for miles around. By ten o'clock that morning, every part of the establishment had been reduced to a pile of smoldering ruins. Mrs. Connorton, the proprietress of the building, had taken out insurance policies to cover the machinery, wardrobe, and theatre through the Phoenix and Monarch fire offices. However, the lessees, Messrs. Elphinstone and Neale, had been uninsured and suffered significant losses. The cause of the fire remains uncertain, but it is believed that some smoldering embers from the previous night's performance may have been the culprit. Despite the tragic loss, the community rallied to rebuild the theatre, and it eventually reopened, continuing to provide entertainment to the people of Whitechapel for many years to come.
