Falls View Suspension Bridge, Niagara, North America, c1869-c1889
Falls View Suspension Bridge, Niagara, North America, c1869-c1889. It was the first bridge to be built below the Falls, on a site known as Falls View, which is within sight of the mighty Horseshoe Falls. It was the largest single span bridge until the Brooklyn Bridge was completed 14 years later. Opened in 1869, this bridge was built by Samuel Keefer to take visitors by foot and carriage to the famous Niagara Falls. The bridge collapsed into the river during a storm in 1889. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring Falls View Suspension Bridge, a remarkable engineering marvel that once stood proudly in Niagara, North America. Dating back to the late 19th century, this bridge was an iconic landmark that allowed visitors to witness the breathtaking beauty of the mighty Horseshoe Falls up close. Constructed by Samuel Keefer and opened in 1869, it held the distinction of being the largest single span bridge until it was surpassed by the Brooklyn Bridge over a decade later. The Falls View Suspension Bridge served as a vital transportation route for both pedestrians and carriages, providing access to one of nature's most extraordinary wonders - Niagara Falls. Sadly, its existence came to an abrupt end during a fierce storm in 1889 when it tragically collapsed into the river below. Despite its untimely demise, this photograph immortalizes its grandeur and significance within history. Plate IV from "Discoveries and Inventions of the 19th Century" by Robert Routledge (1877), this print captures not only a geographical feature but also represents mankind's relentless pursuit of exploration and innovation during that era. Preserved by The Print Collector from Heritage Images' collection at Oxford Science Archive, this image serves as a testament to human ingenuity while paying homage to natural phenomena like waterfalls and their enduring allure.
