Fireworks Building for the Peace Celebration, in Hyde-Park, 1856. Creator: Unknown
Fireworks Building for the Peace Celebration, in Hyde-Park, [London], 1856. Preparations for marking the end of the Crimean War. It is rarely that the Government of this country takes the initiative in any matters of public rejoicing; and the public will naturally feel considerable interest to learn the details of the plan which...is about to be adopted. The grand peace fetes will consist almost exclusively of a display of pyrotechnic art, of the most magnificent and unprecedented character. All the available resources of Woolwich Arsenal have been...directed to the making up of enormous quantities of every description of fireworks...a large number of workmen have been busily engaged...in constructing a temporary wooden shed of enormous dimensions, which is to serve as the place of deposit for the fireworks, and also for their preparation and mounting previously to their discharge'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Fireworks Building in Hyde-Park, London, during the preparations for the Peace Celebration in 1856. The end of the Crimean War brought about a sense of national jubilation, and the British government decided to mark the occasion with an extravagant display of pyrotechnic art. The Illustrated London News reported that the government took the lead in organizing the grand peace fetes, which would primarily consist of a fireworks display of unprecedented magnitude. The resources of Woolwich Arsenal were mobilized for the production of vast quantities of fireworks, and a large number of workers were employed to construct a temporary wooden shed in Hyde-Park. This structure would serve as both a storage facility and a workspace for the preparation and mounting of the fireworks before their discharge. The anticipation was palpable as the public eagerly awaited the details of this grand spectacle. The Fireworks Building stood as a testament to the nation's collective excitement and relief, symbolizing the end of conflict and the promise of peace. The intricate design of the building, with its wooden frame and elaborate roof, adds to the sense of grandeur and anticipation, as the country prepared to come together in celebration. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of national unity and joy.
