Fishermen on the Lake Zaisan, 1909. Creator: Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev
Fishermen on the Lake Zaisan, 1909. This image is from Vidy territorii Sibirskogo kazach'ego voiska (Views of the territory of the Siberian Cossack Host), one of three albums depicting the territories, culture, and way of life of the Cossacks living in the steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. These albums were created for and exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911. The albums were part of a collection of photographs assembled between 1891 and 1918 by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk. The photographs in the albums were taken in 1909 by N.G. Katanaev (son of Colonel G.E. Katanaev), during a journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai (later the oblasts of Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk). Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Fishermen on the Lake Zaisan, 1909," transports us back in time to a significant moment in history. Created by Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev, this image is part of the collection "Views of the territory of the Siberian Cossack Host," which showcases the culture and way of life of the Cossacks living in western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan.
The photograph was taken during a journey made by N.G. Katanaev to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai, now known as Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk oblasts. It captures a group portrait of fishermen standing proudly along the coast of Lake Zaisan. These men exude strength and resilience as they gaze directly at the camera with determination.
The image not only serves as a visual representation of historical significance but also provides insight into daily life during that era. The sepia-toned photograph adds an air of nostalgia to this snapshot frozen in time.
Preserved within Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife, this photograph is one among many assembled between 1891 and 1918 by the museum's collection from Imperial Russian Geographic Society. It was later exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition held in Omsk in 1911.
As we admire this remarkable piece from Heritage Images' vast archives housed within Library Congress' extensive library collections; we are reminded once again how photography can transport us across borders and through time itself. This print stands as a testament to both cultural heritage artistry and historical documentation while offering viewers an opportunity to connect with generations past who called these lands home - their legacy forever captured within its frame.
