Fishing in Kamchatka, 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. EDITORS COMMENTS
Fishing in Kamchatka, 19th Century: A Scene of Daily Life from the Expedition of the Corvette Seniavin This black and white lithograph, titled "Fishing in Kamchatka," is one of 65 maps and illustrations that were published after the historic round-the-world voyage of the Russian corvette Seniavin, led by Captain Fedor Litke between 1826 and 1829. Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I, this expedition was a significant scientific naval survey in the first part of the 19th century. The image, created by the collaborative efforts of four skilled artists - Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz, Godefroy Engelmann, Jules David, and Edouard Jean Marie Hostein - depicts a group of people engaged in fishing on the shores of Kamchatka, a remote and rugged region in the Russian Far East. The scene is set against a picturesque landscape of houses on stilts and a serene lake, with dogs and a horse in the background. The artists, who were part of the French Frères Thierry publishing house, captured the daily life of the Kamchatkan people, showcasing their simple yet resourceful way of living. The use of a fishing rod and the presence of a dog suggest that the people were likely hunting for salmon or other fish species that are abundant in the region. The lithograph is a testament to the rich cultural and geographical heritage of the 19th century, offering a glimpse into the lives of people on the frontier of exploration and discovery. Today, it remains an important historical document, housed in the Library of Congress, a treasure trove of knowledge and artistic expression.
