Fol. 365r, Zachariah, historiated initial I, Zachariah standing with a scroll, c. 1275-1300

Fol. 365r, Zachariah, historiated initial I, Zachariah standing with a scroll, c. 1275-1300. Biblical manuscripts were highly prized and important possessions of churches, monasteries, cathedral schools, and universities throughout medieval Europe. The biblical texts were known as the vulgate, the translations made by Saint Jerome in the fourth century from Hebrew and Greek into Latin, which became the definitive and official Latin version of the Roman Church. In the 13th century, the bible was, for the first time, produced as a single volume with an officially sanctioned sequence to its books and chapters as illustrated by this example. The very extensive decoration of this bible is arranged hierarchically to indicate the relative importance of the various texts so that full or almost full-page initials mark the openings of the first prologue, Genesis, and the first Gospel; historiated initials mark the beginning of each book and illuminated initials mark the Prologues

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Fol. 365r, Zachariah, historiated initial I from a biblical manuscript dating back to the late 13th century. The image depicts Zachariah, standing tall with a scroll in hand, exuding wisdom and authority. During medieval Europe, biblical manuscripts held immense value and were treasured possessions of churches, monasteries, cathedral schools, and universities. These manuscripts contained the vulgate texts - Saint Jerome's translations of Hebrew and Greek into Latin - which became the definitive version for the Roman Church. What makes this particular example significant is that it represents one of the first single-volume bibles produced with an officially sanctioned sequence to its books and chapters. This organizational structure is beautifully illustrated through extensive decoration arranged hierarchically. The opening pages are adorned with full or almost full-page initials marking important sections such as the first prologue, Genesis, and the first Gospel. Each book begins with a striking historiated initial capturing key moments or figures within that specific text. Additionally, illuminated initials grace the Prologues section. Heritage Art/Heritage Images has impeccably captured this stunning piece of history in their print collection without commercial intentions but rather to preserve and share these valuable cultural artifacts for all to appreciate.
