He is regarded as Frances first Renaissance monarch and his kingdom underwent great cultural advances during his reign. After a portrait made in 1565 by Pierre Dumonstier (after an earlier work), in the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, after an early 16th century drawing by Jean Clouet.
