EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from 1915, Frank A. Daniels, the second eldest son of prominent American politician Josephus Daniels and suffragist Addie Worth Bagley, is seen standing next to his younger brother, Jonathan Daniels. The brothers are dressed in formal attire, with Frank wearing a dark suit and Jonathan in a lighter one. Frank is holding a small American flag, while Jonathan appears to be pointing to a banner behind them, the contents of which are not visible. The photograph was taken by the renowned Harris & Ewing Photographic Studio, which was based in Washington D.C. and was known for its high-quality portrait and news photography. The studio was founded by George H. Harris and Martha Ewing Newcombe, and later joined by George W. Harris and Martha Kuntze. Frank Daniels would go on to have a distinguished career in politics, serving as the United States Ambassador to Denmark from 1953 to 1957. His younger brother, Jonathan Daniels, would become a prominent figure in the field of education, serving as the President of Duke University from 1946 to 1972. This photograph provides a glimpse into the lives of the Daniels brothers during their childhood, and highlights the fashion trends of the early 20th century. The use of monochrome tones adds to the timeless quality of the image, making it a valuable addition to any historical collection.
