EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, taken by Harris & Ewing in 1915, we see Frank A. Daniels, the eldest son of prominent American politician Josephus Daniels and suffragist Addie Worth Bagley, standing next to his younger brother, Jonathan Daniels. Both boys are dressed in formal attire, with Frank wearing a dark suit and Jonathan in a lighter-colored outfit. Frank, who is identified as Frank A. Daniels II in some sources, is holding a small American flag in his right hand, while his brother Jonathan looks off to the side with a serious expression on his face. The boys' mother, Addie Worth Daniels, is also present in the photograph, standing behind and to the left of Frank, wearing a long, flowing white dress and holding a banner that reads "Equality." At the time this photograph was taken, their father, Josephus Daniels, was serving as the United States Secretary of the Navy. He had previously made a name for himself as a journalist and editor, and was a strong advocate for women's suffrage. Addie Worth Daniels was an active member of the National American Woman Suffrage Association and a leader in the suffrage movement in North Carolina. The photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the lives of these influential American figures and their family dynamics during the early 20th century. The image is part of the Harris & Ewing Collection at the Library of Congress, which contains over 22,000 glass negatives and 1,100 prints produced by the Washington, D.C.-based photographic studio.
