EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in July 1909, as the French submarine Saphir (Q44) embarks on a journey from Gravesend to London. Accompanied by five other submarines, this remarkable image showcases the technological advancements of the early 20th century. The Saphir, belonging to the Emeraude class of submarines, was launched just a year prior in 1908. Its sleek conning tower stands tall against the backdrop of the River Thames, symbolizing both military prowess and scientific innovation. As these formidable vessels make their way towards London, passing iconic landmarks such as the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Palace, they evoke a sense of national pride for both France and Britain. The fusion of politics and technology is palpable in this scene. Little did anyone know at that time that tragedy would befall the Saphir years later. On January 15th, 1915, she met her demise when striking a mine in the treacherous waters of Dardanelles. Preserved through time within this monochrome print from L Illustration magazine dated July 24th, 1909; it serves as a poignant reminder of an era defined by exploration and progress. This photograph encapsulates not only an important moment in naval history but also highlights how transportation has shaped our world throughout centuries.
