EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing sight - a gargoyle perched on the tower of York Minster in 1958. The artist, CM Dixon, skillfully brings to life this architectural feature that has become synonymous with Gothic cathedrals. York Minster itself is an awe-inspiring masterpiece, known as the largest gothic cathedral in northern Europe and serving as the seat of the Archbishop of York. Its construction was commissioned by Walter de Gray, archbishop in 1215, resulting in a structure that stands as a testament to both religious devotion and architectural brilliance. However, history has not always been kind to this magnificent cathedral. On July 9th, 1984, tragedy struck when a fire ravaged the roof of the south transept due to lightning strike. The subsequent repairs cost around £2.5 million but were necessary to preserve this historic landmark for future generations. In this image captured by CM Dixon during the vibrant decade of the 1950s, we are offered an elevated view from above - showcasing not only the intricate details of this gargoyle but also providing us with a breathtaking vista over urban York. This photograph encapsulates both beauty and history; it invites us into a world where religion meets architecture and where time seems suspended within its ancient walls.
