General Garibaldi - from a portrait by Orsani, 1860. Creator: Smyth
General Garibaldi - from a portrait by Orsani, 1860. Garibaldi, the champion of Italian liberties...The picture is striking from the extreme simplicity of the treatment - neither of the hands being seen, no attempt at attitudinising being dreamed of - all the interest being centred in the noble head, with its fine expanse of forehead, intelligent, thoughtful eye, and that firm mouth, which seems to have been made to command and to inspire confidence, as it compels ready obedience. The General is habited in a green uniform, with the Italian tricolour sash thrown across the shoulders, at the back of which loosely hangs a fur cloak...What he may look like when roused may best be described by those who have seen him, but when in repose there is great serenity in his countenance and a quiet contrasting with the noise and good humour of the fire- eaters who are around him...He walks with a step so rapid that his youngest aides-de-camp have the greatest difficulty in keeping up with him. This quickness of step images the quickness of all his movements, military or political, as the course of the present expedition proves'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait of General Garibaldi, as depicted by the skilled hand of Italian artist Orsani in 1860, showcases the charismatic leader in a moment of quiet reflection. Garibaldi, the champion of Italian liberties, gazes intently with a noble head, boasting a fine expanse of forehead, intelligent, thoughtful eyes, and a firm mouth that commands attention and inspires confidence. Dressed in a simple green uniform adorned with the Italian tricolor sash, the general's fur cloak casually hangs at his back. The serene expression on Garibaldi's face contrasts sharply with the noise and good humor of his fire-eating companions. Despite his reputation as a quick and decisive leader, both militarily and politically, the general is depicted here in a state of calm repose. His rapid step, which his youngest aides-de-camp struggled to keep up with, is a testament to the energy and determination that drove him in his pursuit of Italian independence. This evocative image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1860, offers a glimpse into the enigmatic personality of a man who would become a symbol of Italian unity and freedom. The striking simplicity of the portrait, with its focus on Garibaldi's expressive face, makes it a timeless tribute to a legendary figure in history.
