EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases General George B. McClellan, a prominent figure in the American Civil War. Painted by Felix Octavius Carr Darley, this portrait captures the essence of McClellan's commanding presence and military prowess. George B. McClellan served as the Union army's commanding general during the early stages of the Civil War. However, his cautious approach frustrated President Lincoln, who ultimately relieved him of his command after he failed to defeat Robert E. Lee's Confederate army at the Battle of Antietam in 1862. In this engraving from "The War with the South: A History of the Late Rebellion" we see McClellan donning his military uniform with a distinguished mustache adorning his face. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth to this nineteenth-century portrayal. McClellan's image symbolizes not only a pivotal moment in American history but also embodies qualities such as leadership, determination, and resilience that defined both sides during this tumultuous time. As we gaze upon this remarkable print, we are transported back to an era where men like General George B. McClellan played crucial roles in shaping our nation's destiny through their unwavering commitment to duty and sacrifice on behalf of their countrymen.
