EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases General Tom Thumb's exquisite carriage, a true marvel of the 19th century. Created by an unknown artist in 1844, this miniature coach belonged to Charles Sherwood Stratton, famously known as General Tom Thumb, an American circus performer. Phineas T. Barnum orchestrated a grand European tour for Stratton, during which he had the honor of appearing before Queen Victoria not once but twice. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail by Mr. S. Beaton of Denmark Street in London's Soho district, this elegant dress chariot was perfectly tailored to suit the dimensions of its diminutive owner. Measuring only twenty inches high and eleven inches wide, it exudes opulence with its rich furnishings including luxurious lining, lace adornments, lamps, blinds made from spring rollers and plate glass windows. The door panels proudly display emblems representing both Britannia and the Goddess of Liberty flanked by symbols of national pride – the British Lion and American Eagle. To complete this enchanting spectacle on wheels, a pair of Shetland ponies were chosen to draw the carriage gracefully along its journey. Published in "Illustrated London News" in 1844 (Vol V), this engraving captures not only a unique mode of transportation but also offers us a glimpse into Victorian-era fascination with novelty and extravagance. It serves as a testament to General Tom Thumb's extraordinary life as well as his enduring legacy within popular culture.
