The Geometrical Ascent to the Galleries in the Colosseum, Regents Park, London, 1823 (1926)
The Geometrical Ascent to the Galleries in the Colosseum, Regents Park, London, 1823 (1926). Regents Park Colosseum was a vast, circular exhibition hall with a glazed cupola and a massive portico designed by Decimus Burton (at the time it was the largest building of its kind in the country). It was used for exhibitions and super panoramas, but after a time it went out of fashion as a place of recreation and in 1875 the building was pulled down and Cambridge Gate, a terrace of first class houses, replaced it. From Apollo magazine, volume IV, no 22, October 1926

The Geometrical Ascent to the Galleries in the Colosseum, Regents Park, London, 1823 (1926)
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a moment frozen in time - the grandeur of the Regents Park Colosseum in London during its heyday. Designed by Decimus Burton, this vast circular exhibition hall with its glazed cupola and massive portico was a marvel of architectural innovation. In fact, it held the distinction of being the largest building of its kind in all of Britain. The image showcases an intricate network of geometric staircases leading up to the galleries within the colosseum. These stairs symbolize both physical ascent and metaphorical progression into a world filled with art and culture. The towering pillars that flank these staircases add an air of majesty to this already awe-inspiring scene. Although once bustling with exhibitions and super panoramas, over time, this magnificent structure fell out of favor as a recreational destination. Eventually, in 1875, it was demolished to make way for Cambridge Gate - a row of elegant houses. As we gaze upon this photograph from Apollo magazine's October 1926 issue, we are transported back to an era when imagination knew no bounds. It serves as a reminder that even though buildings may crumble and disappear from our landscape, their legacy lives on through images like these - preserving history for generations to come.
