Glastonbury Abbey - North Door of St. Joseph's Chapel, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Glastonbury Abbey - North Door of St. Joseph's Chapel, 1850. Ruined medieval abbey in Glastonbury, Somerset. View showing...the North Portal of St. Joseph's Chapel, than which nothing in freestone masonry can be more highly sculptured. This building is attributed to the abbacy of Hirlewinus, between the years 1102 and 1120. It consists of semicircular arches (four in number), receding gently in succession into the body of the wall, and diminishing in size as they recede, each resting on pillars, and their fasciae thickly covered with a profusion of sculptured representations. We perceive the whole of this very interesting property is to be disposed of by auction;...whoever may become its possessor, we trust will respect the venerable and romantic ruins'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts the North Door of St. Joseph's Chapel at Glastonbury Abbey, taken in the year 1850. The abbey, located in the picturesque town of Glastonbury, Somerset, England, is a remarkable blend of the 12th and 19th centuries. The North Portal of St. Joseph's Chapel, a masterpiece in freestone masonry, is attributed to the abbacy of Hirlewinus, between the years 1102 and 1120. The semicircular arches, numbering four, gradually recede into the body of the wall, each resting on pillars and their fasciae adorned with intricate carvings. The scene unfolds a fascinating juxtaposition of history and artistry. The ruins of this mediaeval abbey, steeped in Christian tradition and mythology, were disposed of by auction in the 19th century. The new possessor was urged to respect the venerable and romantic ruins, which have since become a significant tourist attraction and a testament to the rich history of Britain. The North Door of St. Joseph's Chapel, with its hand-carved arches and engravings, is a remarkable example of Norman and Romanesque architectural features. The print, published in the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the intricacies of this architectural marvel, inviting us to explore the depths of the Middle Ages and the allure of the past.
