EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the iconic Globe Theatre on the Bank-side, where William Shakespeare himself once graced the stage. Built in 1599 by Shakespeare's own playing company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men, this historic theater became synonymous with his works. Unfortunately, it met a tragic fate when fire consumed it on June 29th, 1613. However, rising from its ashes like a phoenix, a second Globe Theatre was erected on the same spot just a year later. The image showcases the grandeur of this architectural masterpiece against an enchanting backdrop of London's Southwark district. The intricate facade of the theater stands tall and proud as if guarding centuries worth of British literature and theatrical brilliance within its walls. A flag flutters atop one of its towers, symbolizing both national pride and artistic excellence. The monochrome effect adds an air of nostalgia to this scene frozen in time. It is as though we are peering through a window into Elizabethan England itself – witnessing history unfold before our very eyes. This engraving captures not only the physical structure but also embodies the spirit that made The Globe Theatre such an integral part of British culture. Thanks to Sir Walter Besant's meticulous documentation in his book "London - South of Thames" we can now relish this snapshot from over four centuries ago. Its preservation reminds us that while buildings may crumble under various circumstances, their legacy lives on through artistry and storytelling for generations to come.
