Title - The Good Samaritan, mid 19th century by Alfred Jacob Miller (1810-1874) This captivating mid-19th century artwork, titled
EDITORS COMMENTS
The Good Samaritan," is a masterpiece by the renowned American artist, Alfred Jacob Miller. Created during the 1850s, this ink on paper drawing with pencil and watercolor wash on paper depicts a biblical scene from the New Testament, specifically from the Gospel of Luke (10:25-37). In this parable, a man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho is attacked by robbers, leaving him half dead. A priest and a Levite, both religious leaders, pass by without helping him. But a Good Samaritan, a man from a despised ethnic group, stops and shows compassion, taking the injured man to an inn and paying for his care. Miller's depiction of this scene is rich in detail and emotion. The Good Samaritan, a man on horseback, is shown arriving at the scene, dismounting, and helping the injured man up the steps of the inn or tavern. Behind him, two horses stand tethered, their heads turned towards the action. The inn's exterior is depicted with a warm, inviting glow, suggesting the safety and comfort the injured man will find within. The arrival of the Good Samaritan is a powerful reminder of the importance of compassion and kindness, regardless of social status or background. This drawing, with its intricate details and beautiful use of color, is a testament to Miller's artistic skill and the enduring power of this biblical story."
