Goodwood Races: The Chesterfield Cup, 1864. Creator: Unknown

Goodwood Races: The Chesterfield Cup, 1864. 'The Chesterfield Cup is a group in oxydised silver, representing a knight rescuing a lady from a dragon. The subject is taken from Spenser's "Faerie Queen," and the horse and the figure of the woman clinging to her preserver have been admirably managed by Mr. H. Armstead, to whom the work of modelling was intrusted by Mr. Harry Emanuel, of Bond-street. It was won very easily by Mr. Whittaker's King of Utopia, against whom 16 to 1 was obtainable in a field of twenty-five'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the excitement and elegance of the Goodwood Races: The Chesterfield Cup in 1864. The intricate detail of the oxydised silver trophy, depicting a knight rescuing a lady from a dragon, is truly remarkable. Inspired by Spenser's "Faerie Queen," this piece of art was expertly crafted by Mr. H. Armstead under the direction of Mr. Harry Emanuel. The race itself was won easily by Mr. Whittaker's King of Utopia, defying the odds at 16 to 1 in a field of twenty-five competitors. The engraving beautifully showcases the horse and its rider coming to the rescue of the damsel in distress, embodying themes of heroism and chivalry. This historical snapshot from the Illustrated London News gives us a glimpse into 19th-century Britain's love for horse racing and mythology. The black and white imagery adds a timeless quality to this scene, capturing both the intensity of competition and the beauty of artistic expression. Whether you're an art enthusiast or a lover of equestrian sports, this print is sure to captivate your imagination with its blend of history, literature, and craftsmanship. It serves as a reminder that even in times long past, human creativity and passion for storytelling were alive and well on race day at Goodwood.
