Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich, Russian First World War general, 16-17 March 1917
Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich, Russian First World War general, 16-17 March 1917. Grand Duke Nikolai (1856-1929) was Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Army when the First World War broke out in 1914. Severely handicapped by primitive communications, he was dismissed in 1915 after the Germans virtually drove the Russians out of Poland. Re-assigned as Commander of Russian forces in the Caucusus, Nikolai (1856-1929) was re-instated as Commander-in-Chief by the Tsar in his last official act before his abdication in 1917. However within 24 hours of his arrival at his headquarters in Mogilev, his appointment was cancelled by the new Prime Minister, Prince Georgy Lvov

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich, a prominent Russian First World War general, during the tumultuous period of 16-17 March 1917. As Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Army when the war erupted in 1914, Grand Duke Nikolai faced immense challenges due to primitive communications. His dismissal in 1915 came after the Germans nearly pushed the Russians out of Poland. However, fate had other plans for this resilient military leader. Reassigned as Commander of Russian forces in the Caucasus and later reinstated as Commander-in-Chief by Tsar Nicholas II himself just before his abdication in 1917, Grand Duke Nikolai's journey was marked with both triumphs and setbacks. The photograph showcases him inside a railway carriage compartment, donning his distinguished military uniform adorned with medals that symbolize his bravery and dedication to serving his country. The monochrome image adds an air of nostalgia and significance to this historical moment. Yet within a mere day after arriving at his headquarters in Mogilev, Prince Georgy Lvov - the new Prime Minister - abruptly canceled Grand Duke Nikolai's appointment. This turn of events foreshadowed the impending revolution that would soon engulf Russia. In this thought-provoking photograph by Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich Romanov himself (creator unknown), we catch a glimpse into the life of a man caught between duty and destiny amidst one of history's most turbulent periods – World War I and the Russian Revolution.
