Once a grand hotel in Palma, Majorca, Spanish Civil War, c1936
Once a grand hotel in Palma, Majorca, Spanish Civil War, c1936. At the start of the war Majorca was a Nationalist stronghold. Republican forces made an amphibious landing on the island on 16 August 1936 but were forced to leave just under a month later, largely due to the Nationalists superior air power, most of which was provided by Fascist Italy

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to a significant moment in history - the Spanish Civil War of 1936. Once a grand hotel in Palma, Majorca, this building witnessed the turmoil and destruction that engulfed the island during this tumultuous time. At the outbreak of war, Majorca stood as a stronghold for Nationalist forces. However, Republican troops launched an audacious amphibious landing on August 16th, hoping to gain control over the island. Sadly, their efforts were short-lived as they were compelled to retreat less than a month later. The primary reason behind their withdrawal was the superior air power possessed by the Nationalists, largely provided by Fascist Italy. The image captures not only the remnants of what was once an elegant hotel but also showcases the devastating impact of war on its surroundings. Debris litters the streets while damaged buildings stand as haunting reminders of past battles fought here. Amidst this scene of destruction, people can be seen going about their daily lives - perhaps seeking solace or trying to rebuild amidst adversity. The shop fronts lining both sides of the street hint at resilience and determination even in times of chaos. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder that wars leave scars not only on landscapes but also on communities striving for normalcy amidst conflict's ravages. It is through images like these that we are reminded never to forget our shared history and strive towards peace and understanding instead.
