EDITORS COMMENTS
Grand Procession at Plymouth: Celebrating the First Despatch of the Cape Mails in 1850 This photograph, taken from the pages of the Illustrated London News in 1850, depicts a grand procession making its way through the streets of Plymouth, England. The historic occasion marks the first despatch of the Cape Mails, a significant event in the annals of postal history. Plymouth, a bustling port city, had been opened as a Government Mail-Packet Station, connecting Britain with its Cape Colony in present-day South Africa. The momentous event was marked with great fanfare as the first batch of mail was conveyed from the Post-office through the town. The procession, as seen in this image, was a spectacle to behold. It consisted of an array of flags and banners, accompanied by the lively tunes of bands from the Royal Marines, the 4th (King's Own) Regiment, and the Royal Welsh Fusileers. The grandeur of the occasion was further accentuated by the presence of an open carriage, drawn by four white horses, carrying the Mayors of Plymouth and Devonport, resplendent in their full robes. Another notable feature of the procession was an omnibus, also drawn by four white horses, which contained the postmaster of Plymouth and other local authorities. Members of the corporation and influential persons were also in attendance, their letter-bags piled high on the top of the vehicle. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the arrival of mail was cause for celebration, and the connection between continents was forged through the humble yet essential medium of the postal service.
