The Great Exhibition Building in Hyde Park - Moving a Pair of Transept Ribs... 1850. Creator: Unknown
The Great Exhibition Building in Hyde Park - Moving a Pair of Transept Ribs, Framed Together, Previous to Hoisting, 1850. When the frame of double ribs is moved to its horizontal position above the sockets, each side of the frame is attached to pulley-tackle on the top of a derrick raised on either gangway...by means of ropes attached to the crabs. Thus, the whole frame is once more suspended; and the rollers and temporary timbers having been removed, the legs are dropped into their respective sockets. The space on either side, 24 feet wide, is covered with lead, forming what is termed a "lead flat", which will receive the water from the roof of the transept. On the side of the "flat", removed from the transept, is a wide gutter lined with lead, and laid with proper fall to the rain-water heads over the hollow columns'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, titled 'The Great Exhibition Building in Hyde Park - Moving a Pair of Transept Ribs... 1850,' showcases an intriguing moment during the construction of the iconic Great Exhibition Building in London, England. The image, created by an unknown artist, captures the meticulous process of moving a pair of transept ribs into position. The transept ribs, which are large cast iron beams, are suspended above the building's sockets, each attached to pulley-tackle on the top of a derrick. The frame is then hoisted into its horizontal position, allowing the rollers and temporary timbers to be removed. The space between the ribs, measuring 24 feet wide, is covered with a lead flat to receive rainwater from the transept roof. A gutter, also lined with lead, is located on the side of the flat, directing rainwater away from the transept. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the complex engineering feats of the 19th century. Sir Joseph Paxton, the architect of the Great Exhibition Building, oversaw the construction of this groundbreaking structure, which was a symbol of the Industrial Revolution and a testament to Britain's innovative spirit. The image is a valuable record of the labor-intensive process of constructing such a monumental building, involving the dedication and skill of numerous workers. The photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a fascinating insight into the construction industry during this period. The intricate details of the machinery, the workers in action, and the overall sense of progress make this print a captivating addition to any collection of historical architecture or engineering.
