The Great Tobacco Warehouse, at the London Docks, 1856. Creator: Unknown
The Great Tobacco Warehouse, at the London Docks, 1856. On first entering the building and glancing down the avenue - stretching to an immense distance - before one, hedged on each side with huge casks, much resembling the sugar-casks one sees at the doors of grocers, intermixed with large wooden packages of square shape, the mind receives a mingled impression of wonder and amusement at the idea that all these are filled with the closely-pressed leaves of the tobacco plant, and that in a space of time, more or less short, the greater part of the contents of these innumerable and bulky casks will, by the aid of human lungs and lips, have curled off in graceful circlets of white vapour, and "made themselves air". EDITORS COMMENTS
The Great Tobacco Warehouse at the London Docks, 1856, is an intriguing snapshot of industrial Britain during the nineteenth century. This black and white engraving, published in the Illustrated London News, invites us to imagine the wonders of this vast indoor space. As we enter, our eyes are drawn along the seemingly endless avenue of barrels and crates, which bear a striking resemblance to sugar casks and wooden packages. The mind bogs at the thought that each of these bulky containers holds the closely-pressed leaves of the tobacco plant. The scene is a hive of activity, with men in work clothes moving around, some weighing the tobacco on large scales, while others load and unload the barrels. The warehouse's high ceilings and expansive interior allow for an efficient and orderly process. The tobacco, once processed, will soon transform from its solid state into the familiar white vapour that we associate with smoking. The Great Tobacco Warehouse is a testament to the industrial might of Britain during this period. Its walls hold the stories of the countless men and women who laboured within its confines, contributing to the global tobacco trade. The image captures the essence of a world where the mundane and the miraculous coexisted, and where the simple act of making tobacco 'make itself air' was a marvel to behold.
