Grisly Bears, in the Gardens of the Zoological Society, Regent's Park, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Grisly Bears, in the Gardens of the Zoological Society, Regent's Park, 1850....a hunting party who had gone up into the Sierra Nevada, about 800 miles from San Francisco, tracked an enormous Grisly Bear to her lair, in a chasm of the rock, and succeeded in shooting her. Her weight, when dead, was estimated at 1900 lb. and her skin proved to be one of the finest ever taken in that country. Upon searching her lair, three young cubs were discovered, so young, indeed, that they could scarcely see. These fell to the lot of Mr. Pacton, who fills the office of Judge in one of the gold districts, and were by him carried down to San Francisco, and thence by way of Chagres and Panama, by steamer, to this country'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, titled 'Grisly Bears, in the Gardens of the Zoological Society, Regent's Park, 1850,' depicts a pair of majestic grizzly bears in their enclosure at London Zoo. The image, though unsigned, was originally published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, providing a glimpse into the Victorian fascination with exotic animals. The bears, with their shaggy coats and piercing eyes, were likely brought to Europe from North America, where a hunting party had recently tracked and killed an enormous grizzly bear. Weighing an estimated 1900 lb., this bear's pelt was considered one of the finest ever taken in the country. The discovery of her den revealed three young cubs, so young that they were barely able to see. These cubs were subsequently acquired by Mr. Pacton, a judge in one of the gold districts, who brought them to England. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the complex relationship between humans and animals during the 19th century. While the bears were undoubtedly a source of fascination and entertainment for the public, their capture and confinement in zoos raises questions about the ethics of tourism and animal cruelty. The photograph also highlights the role of newspapers in disseminating news and images of far-off lands and exotic creatures, making the world a smaller place for Victorians.
