A Group Picture of Convicts in Front of the Kitchen, 1906-1911. Creator: Isaiah Aronovich Shinkman
A Group Picture of Convicts in Front of the Kitchen, 1906-1911. This photograph is from an album of 47 views of convicts and structures at the Akatuy Prison, one of the main centers where political prisoners were held in the Russian Empire during the late-tsarist period. The album belonged to Isaiah Aronovich Shinkman, a physician and member of the Socialist Revolutionary Party, who was incarcerated at Akatuy from 1906 to 1911. The prison was located at the Akatuy silver mine in Nerchinsk okrug (district) in the Transbaikal Territory of Siberia. Thousands of political prisoners were exiled to Siberia from European Russia and from Poland, Finland, Latvia, and Estonia (all then part of the Russian Empire) following the repression of the Russian Revolution of 1905. Criminal labor convicts and political prisoners had long been sent to Nerchinsk to work in extracting lead-silver ores in the region's mines. Irkutsk State University

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative group photograph, titled "A Group Picture of Convicts in Front of the Kitchen," was captured by Isaiah Aronovich Shinkman during his imprisonment at the Akatuy Prison in Nerchinsk okrug, Transbaikal Territory, Russia, between 1906 and 1911. The album containing this image and forty-six others is a poignant testament to the harsh realities faced by political prisoners in the Russian Empire during the late-tsarist period. Isaiah Aronovich Shinkman, a physician and member of the Socialist Revolutionary Party, was among the thousands of individuals exiled to Siberia following the repression of the Russian Revolution of 1905. Akatuy Prison, situated at the Akatuy silver mine, was a common destination for both criminal labor convicts and political prisoners. The mine, which had long been a source of lead-silver ores, provided the Russian government with a ready-made labor force. The photograph depicts a group of convicts, their faces etched with the weariness and despair of their circumstances. They stand in front of a makeshift kitchen, its wooden walls and chimney bearing the brunt of the elements. The scene is a stark reminder of the harsh living conditions endured by those incarcerated at Akatuy Prison. The image offers a glimpse into the daily lives of political prisoners, their shared struggles, and the resilience that sustained them through their ordeal. Isaiah Aronovich Shinkman's album is a valuable historical resource, providing a unique perspective on the experiences of political prisoners in the Russian Empire during a tumultuous period in Russian history.
