EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Group of Pupils in the First Four Grades in the School Garden," was captured by Russian photographer N. Terekhov in 1889. The image is a rare glimpse into the past of the Aleksandrovsky School in the Siberian city of Tyumen (then known as Tiumen'), which operated from 1879 until 1919. Founded on the initiative of Governor-General of Siberia, Nikolai Gennadievich Kaznakov, the school provided education to young men from the first to the sixth grades. Through a project organized by American journalist and explorer George Kennan, the school received equipment from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The students were taught a diverse curriculum that included Russian, German, and French, as well as various branches of mathematics, history, drawing, and religion. The photograph shows a group of boys from the first to the fourth grades, dressed in their uniforms, gathered in the school garden. The boys appear to be engaged in an activity, possibly a lesson, under the watchful eyes of their teachers. The exterior of the school building can be seen in the background, with its ornate architecture and columns. The image is a testament to the rich educational heritage of the Aleksandrovsky School and the dedication of its founders and teachers to providing quality education to the young boys of Siberia during the late 19th century. The photograph, with its sepia tones, adds to its historical charm and authenticity.
