EDITORS COMMENTS
Haddon Hall, a 11th-century architectural marvel, stands proudly on the outskirts of Bakewell, Derbyshire, 150 miles north of London and just 14 miles from Buxton. This magnificent country house, a source of inspiration for artists, antiquaries, and nature lovers alike, was originally built by William the Conqueror for his illegitimate son, William Peveril. The ancient State Room, believed to be the oldest in Haddon, is a testament to the rich history of this magnificent structure. The long gallery, once the scene of grand celebrations, played host to over 200 couples who danced at the time of the conclusion of peace with America. As you wander through the halls of this historic estate, you are transported back in time. The rooms, filled with intricate woodwork, ornate fireplaces, and ancient tapestries, offer a glimpse into the lives of those who once called Haddon Hall home. But the true beauty of Haddon Hall lies not just within its walls. From the Eagle Tower, you can take in the breathtaking view of the surrounding countryside, with the River Wye meandering through the valley below. The castle, with its fortifications and towers, stands proud against the backdrop of the Derbyshire hills. This image, created by S Read and published in the Illustrated London News in 1854, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when Haddon Hall was a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from far and wide to marvel at its ancient beauty.
