EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Half-Penny Ices" by John Thomson, dates back to the 1870s. The image, printed between 1877 and 1878, transports us back in time to the streets of the nineteenth century. In the foreground, we see a young boy, perhaps around ten years old, perched on the edge of a wooden cart. He is intently focused on his task, selling halfpenny ices to passersby. The ices, which resemble modern-day ice lollies, are displayed in a wooden box on the cart, arranged neatly in rows. The boy wears simple clothing typical of the era, adding to the authenticity of the scene. The cart, drawn by a horse, is a common sight on the streets of the time, used for transporting various goods from one place to another. The road behind the cart is bustling with activity, with people of all ages and genders going about their daily business. The wooden buildings and cobblestone streets add to the sense of history and tradition. The photograph was taken using the Woodbury Type process, a popular photographic printing method of the time. The image is in black and white, with the contrast between the dark cart and the light clothing of the people creating a striking visual effect. This photograph is a valuable piece of heritage art, showcasing the everyday life and trade practices of the nineteenth century. It is now part of the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it continues to inspire and educate visitors about the history of photography and the social and cultural context of the 1800s.
