Hall of Lofty Pines, 1703. Creator: Wang Hui (Chinese, 1632-1717)
Hall of Lofty Pines, 1703. Wang Hui, a leading painter in the orthodox school of the early Qing dynasty (1644-1911), was commissioned to paint this landscape with a country estate for Li Duna (1628-1703), vice minister of justice in Emperor Kangxis court. The emperor had honored Li by granting him a piece of calligraphy with the name of Lis retirement retreat, " Hall of Lofty Pines." He drew a comparison between pines and Lis upright character, resilience, and longevity. Wang Huis painting was supposed to allow Li to imagine living in a beautiful, secluded compound among the hills and pines. Sadly, Li died before seeing the completed painting and before receiving the emperors permission to retire. The landscape begins with peaceful riverbanks and low hills. The pines around the estate in the middle of the handscroll are truly lofty, some stretching even beyond the frame of the painting. Li Duna, the estates owner, is shown twice in his serene mountain retreat: first approaching the entrance to the compound with two servants at the right, and then later in the scroll, to the left, reading in the comfort of an inner room

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Wang Hui's masterpiece, "Hall of Lofty Pines" painted in 1703. Wang Hui, a renowned painter during the early Qing dynasty, was commissioned to create this landscape for Li Duna, vice minister of justice in Emperor Kangxi's court. The painting depicts a country estate surrounded by majestic pines that symbolize Li's upright character and resilience. The emperor had honored Li with a piece of calligraphy bearing the name "Hall of Lofty Pines" comparing his virtues to these enduring trees. Through Wang Hui's artistry, Li was meant to envision himself living in this secluded paradise nestled among hills and towering pines. Tragically, before seeing the completed painting or receiving permission from the emperor to retire, Li passed away. Nevertheless, this handscroll showcases serene riverbanks and gentle hills at its beginning before revealing the grandeur of the estate enveloped by lofty pines stretching beyond even the frame itself. Within this idyllic retreat lies an image of Li Duna depicted twice: first approaching with two servants at his side as they enter through its gates; then later on in the scroll reading peacefully within an inner room. Heritage Art/Heritage Images has beautifully captured every intricate detail and emotion conveyed by Wang Hui's brushstrokes in this stunning photo print. It serves as a poignant reminder not only of artistic mastery but also how dreams can be left unfulfilled amidst life's fleeting nature.
