EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, captured between 1917 and 1927, showcases the stunning exterior of Miramar, a neoclassical mansion located in Newport, Rhode Island, United States. Designed by renowned architect Horace Trumbauer, Miramar was commissioned by Eleanor Elkins Widener and her late husband, George Widener, a wealthy heir and philanthropist. Tragically, George perished aboard the RMS Titanic in 1912. Following his death, Eleanor married geographer and explorer Alexander H. Rice Jr., and Miramar became their summer residence. The formal garden, visible in the photograph, was meticulously designed by Jacques Greber, a renowned landscape gardener. The Miramar estate, with its grandeur and elegance, epitomizes the opulence and refinement of the American elite during the 1910s and 1920s. The neoclassical design of the mansion, with its grand columns, intricate details, and symmetrical facade, is a testament to the architectural prowess of Horace Trumbauer. The lush greenery and meticulously manicured garden add to the overall beauty and serenity of the estate. This photograph, taken by Frances Benjamin Johnston, is a valuable historical record of a bygone era and a testament to the enduring legacy of American heritage and art.
