"Hammersmith Farm, located on Harrison Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island, was originally built for John W. Auchincloss in 1887. The house and its surrounding landscape underwent significant changes in the early 1900s under the guidance of architects James Frederick Dawson and Henry Hill Blossom, working in collaboration with the Olmsted Brothers. In this photograph, taken by Frances Benjamin Johnston in 1917, we see the grandeur of the house and its meticulously designed gardens. The gravel path leads to a flower bed, adorned with vibrant blooms, while a lantern stands sentinel at the edge of the frame.
