EDITORS COMMENTS
Hammersmith Farm, located on Harrison Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island, is a stunning example of early 20th century American architecture and landscaping. Originally built for John W. Auchincloss in 1887, the house was later owned by Hugh Dudley Auchincloss, for whom the farm is named. In 1909-1910, the property underwent significant landscaping under the direction of James Frederick Dawson and Henry Hill Blossom of the Olmsted Brothers firm. This hand-coloured lantern slide photograph, taken by Frances Benjamin Johnston in 1917, offers a detailed view of the house and its surroundings. The circular driveway leads up to the grand mansion, which is adorned with intricate details and hand-tinted colors. The gardens, designed by the Olmsted Brothers, feature winding paths, lush grass, and vibrant flowers. The house, which is now a historic landmark, was originally built in the Queen Anne style, with a red brick exterior and a variety of architectural features, including gables, dormers, and porches. The landscaping, which complements the house perfectly, includes a variety of trees, shrubs, and flowers, creating a picturesque scene that has endured through the decades. Frances Benjamin Johnston was a prominent American photographer and architectural recordist, known for her documentation of historic buildings and landscapes. Her work, including this photograph of Hammersmith Farm, is an important contribution to the historical record of American architecture and landscaping in the early 20th century.
