The Hand of Wren in the Fabric of Westminster Abbey, c1935
EDITORS COMMENTS
captures a mesmerizing moment in London's architectural history. This print by Donald McLeish showcases the magnificent facade of Westminster Abbey, an iconic symbol of British Christianity. Dating back to the 17th century, this awe-inspiring abbey underwent significant renovations under the supervision of Christopher Wren, who was appointed Surveyor General & Sub Commissioner for Repairs in 1698. His visionary touch included leaded light windows and deep vaults that added to the grandeur of this sacred place. The image also features two striking western towers designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor between 1722 and 1745. These towers stand tall as a testament to both architectural brilliance and historical significance. In the foreground stands the poignant Westminster Scholars War Memorial, also known as the Crimea and Indian Mutiny Memorial. Designed by George Gilbert Scott, it pays tribute to those who sacrificed their lives during these conflicts. This monochrome photograph is part of "Wonderful London" a publication edited by Arthur St John Adcock that beautifully captures various aspects of England's capital city. The print transports viewers back to a time when politics intertwined with religion against a backdrop dominated by stunning architecture. As we gaze upon this remarkable image, we are reminded not only of London's rich heritage but also how art can immortalize moments that shape our collective memory.
