EDITORS COMMENTS
Henry FitzRoy, 1st Duke of Grafton (1663-1690), was the natural son of King Charles II of England and Barbara Palmer, Duchess of Cleveland. Born out of wedlock, FitzRoy was created Duke of Grafton in 1675, making him the first English duke born illegitimately. In this engraving by Robert Dunkarton, the Duke is depicted in formal attire, wearing a red coat with gold lacing and a white cravat. His dark hair is styled in the fashionable long curls of the time. The Duke's apparel signifies his high rank in the aristocracy, as well as his position in the Admiralty, where he served as First Lord and Admiral of the Fleet. The Duke's mother, Barbara Palmer, Duchess of Cleveland, is also depicted in the engraving, standing behind her son with her arms crossed. Known as Lady Castlemaine before her marriage to the Duke of Cleveland, she was a prominent figure at the English court during the Restoration. The Duke's obituary, which accompanies this image in 'Portraits of characters illustrious in British History from the beginning of the reign of Henry the Eighth to the end of the reign of James the Second' by Samuel Woodburn, notes that he died at the age of 27, leaving no issue. This black and white engraving provides a glimpse into the fashionable clothing and aristocratic culture of the late 17th century in England.
