Henry Morgan, 17th century Welsh buccaneer, (1873)
Henry Morgan, 17th century Welsh buccaneer, (1873). Morgan (1635-1688) was a notorious pirate and buccaneer who, with the tacit support of the English government, harried and plundered Spains Caribbean colonies. In the Anglo-Dutch War of 1665-1667 he did the same to the Dutch. Morgan captured Panama in 1671, but after a peace agreement was signed with Spain, he was arrested and sent to London. His fortunes changed again in 1674, when he was knighted by Charles II, who sent him abroad again as deputy governor of Jamaica. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the legendary figure of Henry Morgan, a 17th-century Welsh buccaneer. Known for his audacious exploits on the high seas, Morgan was a notorious pirate who plundered Spain's Caribbean colonies with the tacit support of the English government. During the Anglo-Dutch War of 1665-1667, he turned his attention towards Dutch territories, continuing his reign of terror. In 1671, Morgan achieved one of his greatest victories by capturing Panama. However, after a peace agreement was reached with Spain, he found himself arrested and sent to London. Fate smiled upon him once again in 1674 when Charles II knighted him and appointed him as deputy governor of Jamaica. This engraving from Samuel Hazard's book "Santo Domingo: past and present" offers us a glimpse into this enigmatic character's life during the late 17th century. The monochrome image adds an air of mystery to Morgan's persona as we see him portrayed as a rugged yet charismatic man. Henry Morgan remains an enduring symbol of adventure and rebellion against authority. His story is one that continues to captivate our imaginations even centuries later. This print serves as a reminder of his daring escapades on the open sea and his lasting impact on maritime history.
