Henry Sacheverell, English High Church clergyman and politician, early 18th century (1906)

Henry Sacheverell, English High Church clergyman and politician, early 18th century (1906). Sacheverell (1674-1724) preached two sermons strongly criticising the Whig Governments policy regarding the church in 1709. After a trial he was suspended from preaching for two years, which contributed to the outbreak of rioting in London and elsewhere in the country (Sacheverell Riots) in 1710. The riots contributed to the government drafting the Riot Act in 1714. A print from Queen Anne, by Herbert Paul, Goupil and Co, London, 1906

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph print captures the enigmatic figure of Henry Sacheverell, an influential English High Church clergyman and politician from the early 18th century. Created in 1906 by an unknown artist, this portrait showcases Sacheverell's distinctive long hairstyle and his dignified presence. Sacheverell rose to prominence when he delivered two powerful sermons in 1709 that vehemently criticized the Whig Government's policies towards the church. As a result, he faced a trial and was suspended from preaching for two years. This punishment had far-reaching consequences as it sparked widespread rioting in London and other parts of England known as the "Sacheverell Riots" in 1710. The impact of these riots was significant enough to prompt the government to draft the Riot Act in 1714, which aimed to maintain law and order during times of civil unrest. The events surrounding Sacheverell's sermons and subsequent suspension highlight not only his influence within religious circles but also his role as a catalyst for political upheaval. This historical print is part of Goupil & Co. 's collection titled "Queen Anne" created by Herbert Paul. It offers us a glimpse into a pivotal moment in British history when religion, politics, and public sentiment collided. Through this image, we are reminded of Henry Sacheverell's lasting impact on both religious discourse and political activism during the tumultuous early decades of the 18th century.
