EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white portrait print showcases Henry Spencer, the First Earl of Sunderland, a prominent English soldier during the early-mid 19th century. Painted by H Robinson, this image captures the essence of an aristocratic figure from that era. Henry Spencer played a significant role in the English Civil War as he fought alongside the Royalists in various battles. He participated in major conflicts such as the Battle of Edgehill in 1642, where his bravery on the battlefield was commendable. Additionally, he contributed to events like the Siege of Gloucester and the First Battle of Newbury. Tragically, Henry's life was cut short at just 23 years old when he succumbed to a cannonball during one of these battles. This engraving produced by The London Printing and Publishing Company allows us to appreciate Henry's noble features and curly hair while adorned in an impressive suit of armor. As we gaze upon this monochrome depiction, we are transported back to a time when honor and loyalty were paramount values for men like Henry Spencer - individuals who dedicated their lives to serving their country with unwavering courage on behalf of their chosen cause.
