Henry Arthur Herbert, M.P. Mover of the Address to Her Majesty, in the House of Commons, from a portrait by Sir W.C. Ross, R.A. 1854. British MP for County Kerry in Ireland. In addition to serving his country in Parliament, he has been for some time actively and honourably engaged in the various duties which devolve on the owners of large properties. He is a magistrate of Kerry, and, in 1853, was appointed Lord-Lieutenant of that county. Recently, when the [Crimean] war so forcibly called for the development of the military resources of the country, Mr. Herbert devoted himself greatly to the raising of the Militia...and on the formation of the regiment for Kerry he was appointed Colonel'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Herbert, M.P., the esteemed British Member of Parliament for County Kerry in Ireland, as he moved the Address to Her Majesty in the House of Commons in 1854. The portrait, originally painted by Sir William Charles Ross, R.A., showcases Herbert's distinguished appearance with his well-groomed sideburns and sideboards, which were popular among men of the time. Herbert was not only an influential figure in politics but also an active and honorable landowner. He served as a magistrate in Kerry and, in 1853, was appointed as the Lord-Lieutenant of the county. With the onset of the Crimean War, Herbert's dedication to his country extended beyond Parliament. He devoted himself to the raising of the Militia and, upon the formation of the regiment for Kerry, was appointed as its Colonel. The print, published in the Illustrated London News in 1854, highlights the multifaceted role of Herbert in both politics and the military during a pivotal period in British history. His commitment to his duties as a landowner, magistrate, and military leader underscores the importance of colonial figures in shaping the political and social landscape of the nineteenth century.
