EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 13th-14th century sandstone sculpture depicts the Hindu god Vishnu, one of the principal deities in Hinduism. The god is shown in his reclining form, known as Anantasayana or Shesha-sayana, lying on the serpent Ananta, also known as Shesha. Vishnu is often depicted in this form, symbolizing his eternal rest and the cyclical nature of time. The god is adorned with various ornaments and jewels, and his four arms are in different mudras or symbolic gestures. In his primary hand, he holds a conch shell, while the other three hands are in the gestures of granting boons, fearlessness, and protection. The intricate details of Vishnu's figure, the serene expression on his face, and the delicate carvings of the serpent Ananta and various celestial beings around him, showcase the exceptional craftsmanship of the artist. The origin of this sculpture is uncertain, but it is believed to have come from Nepal, a country rich in Hindu and Buddhist art. Nepalese art of this period is characterized by its intricate details, delicate carvings, and the use of naturalistic forms. This sculpture is an excellent example of the artistic achievements of the region during the medieval period. The sculpture is now part of the South and Southeast Asian Art collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it continues to inspire awe and fascination among visitors. The Hindu god Vishnu, with his timeless beauty and profound symbolism, is a testament to the enduring power of art and the rich cultural heritage of South Asia.
