EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 9th century chlorite schist carving depicts the Hindu God Vishnu, a central deity in Hinduism and one of the principal gods in the Hindu triumvirate. The God is shown in his reclining form, known as Anantasayana or Shesha-Vishnu, lying on the serpent Ananta, who serves as his bed. Vishnu's eight arms, each holding a distinct symbol or object, are spread out in a gesture of protection and abundance. His naked yet serene figure is a testament to the intricate craftsmanship of the unknown artist. The sculpture originates from South East Asia, likely from India or Hindustan, and is now part of the collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). The carving's intricate details and delicate features suggest that it was created during the Pala or Sena period, between 875 and 900 AD. The use of chlorite schist, a hard and durable stone, indicates that this figurine was intended for long-term display and veneration. The nudity of the figure is not a sign of vulgarity but rather a representation of the divine form, emphasizing Vishnu's transcendence of worldly desires and material attachments. This masterpiece is a significant addition to the museum's collection of Asian art and a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of the Indian subcontinent.
