EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases H.M.S. Euryalus, the historic frigate that bore witness to a significant milestone in the life of Prince Alfred, the second eldest son of Queen Victoria. Taken in 1858, the image immortalizes the Euryalus in all her glory, having just returned from an honorable visit to Cherbourg where she was admired by French naval officers. The Euryalus, a marvel of naval engineering, boasted impressive dimensions with a length of 245 feet, a beam of 50 feet 9 inches, and a tonnage of 2371. Her power was propelled by 400 horses, and her armament was formidable, consisting of twenty-two 32-pounders on the main deck, eight 6-inch guns, two 8-inch guns, and a 10-foot pivot-gun, all of substantial weight. Following her triumphant return, the Euryalus was graced with a visit from Her Majesty Queen Victoria herself, who expressed her immense satisfaction upon inspecting this epitome of a frigate. The Euryalus's impeccable design, power, and armament solidified her place as a symbol of British naval prowess and a fitting vessel for Prince Alfred's inaugural voyage to sea.
