EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the dramatic events of Holland's Raid on the Thames in c1668, as depicted by renowned artist Willem Schellinks. The raid was a significant event during the Second Anglo-Dutch War, where Dutch forces led by Admiral Michiel de Ruyter successfully attacked and captured English naval ships docked in Chatham. In this monochrome image, we witness the audacious Dutch fleet sailing up the Thames, leaving a trail of smoke and destruction in their wake. The burning ships and flames engulfing them symbolize the intensity of battle and warfare that took place during this historic event. The print not only showcases the physical geography of both countries but also represents a concept of power struggle between Britain and Holland. It serves as a reminder of British defeat and humiliation at the hands of their Dutch adversaries. Schellinks' engraving skillfully portrays every detail, from each ship to geographical features along the river Medway. This black-and-white masterpiece brings to life an important naval battle that shaped 17th-century history. As we gaze upon this remarkable artwork, we are transported back in time to witness one of England's darkest moments at sea. It is through prints like these that we can appreciate both historical events and artistic talent while reflecting on centuries-old conflicts that have shaped our world today.
