Holyhead Harbour Works...the Face of the Mountain after the Grand Blasting Operations... 1857. Creator: Unknown
Holyhead Harbour Works - View of the Face of the Mountain after the Grand Blasting Operations, Jan. 16, 1857: the Quantity of Quartz Rock Displaced 120, 000 Tons, by a Charge of 16, 000 Pounds of Gunpowder, 1857. The operation and engineering arrangements were under the personal direction of Mr. Charles Rigby, assisted by Mr. Reitheimer, the resident engineer of the firm.
All present were much gratified and astonished by the effects produced with such certainty by the powerful agency of gunpowder and the voltaic battery...[The] battery was placed a short distance from the quarries, and the spectators were within a protected...observatory in front of the mountain, at a distance of only 600 yards, from which they were enabled to witness the explosion without danger, not a stone having been propelled 100 yards from the face of the quarry'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the awe-inspiring aftermath of the grand blasting operations at Holyhead Harbour Works in January 1857. The 'Face of the Mountain' stands majestically, its once solid surface now transformed by the explosive power of 16,000 pounds of gunpowder. The quartz rock that was displaced as a result of this monumental explosion amounted to an impressive 120,000 tons. The scene was meticulously overseen by Mr. Charles Rigby and Mr. Reitheimer, the firm's resident engineer, who ensured the safe and efficient execution of this engineering feat. The spectators, gathered in anticipation, were treated to a breathtaking display of power and precision. The battery, which played a crucial role in the blasting process, was positioned a short distance from the quarries. The onlookers, ensconced in a protected observatory just 600 yards away, were afforded an unobstructed view of the explosion. Witnesses were left in a state of wonder and gratification, as not a single stone was propelled beyond the confines of the quarry. This photograph, taken from 'Illustrated London News' in 1857, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the ingenuity and technological prowess of the Victorian era. The grand blasting operations at Holyhead Harbour Works serve as a testament to the human capacity to harness the forces of nature and shape the landscape to meet the demands of progress.
