The Hon. East India Company's Banquet at the London Tavern to Lieutenant-General Patrick Grant, C.B. The New Commander-in- Chief of Madras, 1856. The spacious hall was magnificently decorated...The buffet called "St. George's" was nearly twenty feet in height, and, the background, being formed of rich crimson velvet, produced a gorgeous effect. The supporters of the Royal arms, in white and gold, were placed on each side, while on the top stood a figure of Victory holding a jewelled crown of gold over a bust of Her Majesty...the whole was brilliantly lighted up with a large number of wax-lights. At the centre of the head table...was an elegantly-designed plateau in solid silver, representing the Sikh chiefs delivering up their arms at the close of the campaign in 1849'. Grant was a senior Indian Army officer, and directed operations against the mutineers during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

This photograph, taken from the Illustrated London News in 1856, depicts The Honourable East India Company's banquet in honor of Lieutenant-General Patrick Grant, C.B., the new Commander-in-Chief of Madras. The grand event took place at the London Tavern, and the spacious hall was magnificently decorated for the occasion. The buffet, named 'St. George's,' stood nearly twenty feet in height, with a rich crimson velvet background that created a stunning visual effect. The supporters of the Royal arms, in white and gold, were placed on each side, and on the top stood a figure of Victory holding a jewelled crown of gold over a bust of Queen Victoria.
