EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of Horse Guards Parade, framed perfectly within the archway of Treasury Passage. Taken around 1935 by an unknown creator, this image showcases the military parade ground off Whitehall in Westminster, London. Horse Guards Parade holds great historical significance as it serves as the venue for annual ceremonies like Trooping the Colour on the monarch's official birthday and Beating Retreat. The photograph highlights a remarkable architectural feature known as Cadiz Memorial, positioned just right of center. This French mortar, designed in the form of a Chinese dragon, was captured during the battle of Salamanca and gifted to Britain by Spain in 1812 to commemorate Duke Wellington's successful lifting of the siege on Cadiz. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth and timelessness to this stunning cityscape shot. It beautifully portrays not only the grandeur of London's architecture but also its rich history intertwined with war and triumphs. As you gaze upon this print, you can almost hear echoes from decades past reverberating through its lanes and streets. Originally featured in "Wonderful London, Volume 1" edited by Arthur St John Adcock around 1935, this print is a testament to both artistic excellence and historical documentation. Its presence evokes a sense of awe while reminding us that even amidst modernity, there are glimpses into our shared heritage waiting to be discovered.
