Hunting with Falcons in a Landscape, c. 1558-1560; borders added probably 1700s. The Mughals hunted on horseback with falcons. The hunting party would ride out into the wild and flush the prey. Then, its hood removed, the falcon would chase the prey and bring it down. From childhood Akbar loved hunting, and this painting may be a rare depiction of Akbar as a youth at the lower left, with the black feather in his white turban. The falcon that has caught a duck has been hooded and is being passed between the young man and his bearded companion. This important work was painted by one of the Persian artists Akbars father brought to India from Iran. The inscription at the upper right gives the name of one of the other Persian artists, but it is probably an erroneous later addition

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a scene of falconry in the Mughal era, dating back to the late 16th century. The Mughals were known for their love of hunting and would venture into the wilderness on horseback accompanied by falcons. In this artwork, believed to depict a young Akbar, one can witness the thrill of the hunt as a hooded falcon is passed between two figures. The painting showcases exquisite details and vibrant colors, showcasing the skill of Persian artists who were brought to India from Iran by Akbar's father. It is interesting to note that this particular piece has borders added in the 1700s, possibly an attempt to enhance its aesthetic appeal during that time. Falconry was not only a sport but also symbolized power and prestige during the Mughal period. The falcon's ability to swiftly capture its prey demonstrated both agility and control. This image provides us with a glimpse into an important aspect of Mughal culture and offers insight into Akbar's early fascination with hunting. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this painting serves as a testament to the rich heritage shared between Persia and India during this historical period. Its presence allows us to appreciate not only artistic mastery but also cultural exchange across borders centuries ago.
