EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print, created by the renowned Japanese artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi in 1887, depicts Ichikawa Danjuro IX in the role of Musashibo Benkei from the play "Kanjincho." Musashibo Benkei, a legendary warrior monk from the Heian period, is known for his loyalty and devotion to the famous samurai, Musashi Miyamoto. In this print, Danjuro IX is portrayed with an intense expression, gazing upwards as if in deep thought or contemplation. He wears the traditional costume of a monk, complete with a black robe, shaved head, and a distinctive hat adorned with a white band. The intricate details of his clothing, from the folds of his robe to the calligraphy on his sash, are expertly rendered in the block printing technique. The use of bold black color adds a sense of drama and depth to the image. The print is part of Yoshitoshi's series "Lives of Modern People," which showcases contemporary figures from Japanese society. This powerful and evocative image not only captures the essence of the iconic character Musashibo Benkei but also highlights the rich cultural heritage of Japanese theater and art during the Meiji era.
